This year all of Leicester’s faculty is engaged in a unique professional development opportunity to improve writing instruction. Once a month, teachers gather to learn and discuss Lucy Calkins’s writer’s workshop model.  This is a research-based method of teaching that has been successfully implemented in many schools.  The heart of the writer’s workshop is to teach young writers strategies for effective writing, not simply how to write a report. Children learn how to be good writers just like their favorite authors and, ideally, master these writing strategies to produce meaningful, genuine work. Right now, the school is energized by this new way of teaching. Ask your student what s/he has written today!
