News from the Music Corner

I was very proud of all the students who participated in the winter concert. They sang and played some very challenging music, and did a wonderful job as always! The first week back at school after a concert, we always spend some time watching videos of the concert and evaluating our performance - what went well, what could we do better, and which song did we like the most and why. Thinking critically about our work is a very important skill in the arts, as it is in every area.

Here’s what’s coming up for the various music classes:

· Pre K and K will be continuing the First Steps in Music curriculum - a wide variety of singing, playing instruments, chanting, and dancing -  and exploring musical concepts such as slow and fast, high and low, loud and soft.

· Grades 1 and 2 will be exploring musical form using songs and dances, and will then dive into learning about instrument families and St. Seans’ “Carnival of the Animals.”

· Grades 3 and 4 will be playing recorders. We will be doing the Recorder Karate program again, with an additional focus on reading music, and also learning recorder parts that can be played while part of the class is singing a song.

· Grades 5 and 6 have begun studying musicals: learning songs from various stage and film musicals, and getting ready to put on a mini-musical sometime in the spring.

Sounds like a lot of fun to me!
