Hamlet A Success!

It was thrilling to see grades 3-6 perform at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater this week. Three guest teachers worked for several weeks, first introducing students to theater games and then casting and directing them in Act II of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.  Our students joined those of Mary Hogan and Shoreham to complete the production.

It is amazing how the performing arts provide the perfect context for learning and practicing skills that we work on regularly in school: reading, memorizing, following directions, and problem-solving to name a few. After our local dress rehearsal, the teachers coached the performers extensively with feedback. Students were brave as they took the criticism and tried over and over again to get it right. One student in particular was grilled and when he got it, the entire theater erupted in whoops and applause out of the compassion and pride for their classmate!

The day after the show, students and teachers alike were buzzing. Stories of how children helped each other throughout the long day were told. Students talked about how impressed they were with themselves for remembering their lines and bravely looking into those bright lights with so many people watching them! A true sense of pride and community was present, the kind that appears when a great goal has been achieved through teamwork.

Congratulations students, for a great show! Thank you teachers and staff who helped to make the entire experience a success!
